Contaminants in Food: Metabolic Fate and Analytical Approaches
State-of-the-Art and Future Trends
National Veterinary School, Nantes, France
March 26-30th, 2007
The Spring School took place at the LABERCA (National Veterinary School of Nantes, France), National Reference Laboratory for Growth Promoters and Contaminants Analysis in Food.
The main objective was to give PhD students, post docs and young scientists in-depth knowledge of the metabolism and analysis of food contaminants. The course included theoretical lectures and hands-on training in Advanced Analytical Chemistry based on Mass Spectrometry and Bioassays.
Advertised widely with only 20 places, the course attracted 67 applications. Participants were carefully selected in order to make sure that their respective projects corresponded to the course content. Originating from fourteen European countries, the trainees went through a very dense programme, including the regulatory aspects of the analysis of contaminants in food, analytical chemistry and food safety topics, the metabolism of contaminants and finally risk assessment. Fourteen lecturers, belonging mainly to the CASCADE network and BioCop project contributed to making this event a success.
The general evaluation made by the participants was very positive. They found the scientific level of the lectures to be very good and particularly enjoyed the risk assessment module. Participants expressed that this course was a real opportunity for them to gain knowledge, exchange information with colleagues from all over Europe and building a network of contacts, which were the main objectives of the Spring School.
